On a regular basis, organizations, such as LiUNA, train and enhance experiential learning for students in the HWCDSB and HWDSB. Continuous collaboration with LiUNA tremendously benefits these students and accelerates the students’ individual career pathway plan. Dedicated industry trades people, teachers, instructors and volunteers extend their vast knowledge and skills to a new generation of skilled trades workers. The relationships have been built over a long time and have strengthened partnerships for a common goal to give our youth a solid foundation and future prospects. Many programs, such as the Construction Craft Worker Apprenticeship at LiUNA Local 837, providestraining in Health and Safety, Form Setting, Pipe Laying, Concrete Finishing, Blue Print Reading, and many more. "There's a lot to learn, both theoretical and practicaland it definitely opens the door to opportunity” notes Nick Ciccone, Training Director with LiUNA Local 837.Students not only learn trade specific skills, but the collaboration of strong organizations fosters a network of contacts to prepare our youth for their future.
One of the latest projects of this partnership was the production and donation of six concrete benches to complete St. Francis Xavier School’s beautification project. The benches were just recently delivered to the school and placed into position. “It was exciting to see the final piece to our project”, stated principal Olga Scheer. “We are overwhelmed with the donation, let alone, the beautiful handiwork produced by students and training staff.” Placards will be affixed to each bench to recognize the partnership and donation to the school community. The garden area and benches will be a school focal point for many years to come.
